Diwali, or Festival of Lights
Diwali, or Festival of Lights is one of the most important Hindu holidays, which has become a vivid event in Kuala Lumpur’s cultural life. It is usually celebrated in the late October – early November.
Being a sign of triumph of good over evil, or light over darkness, the festival takes place in the ethnic quarter Little India, near the Brickfields district. Its streets and temples are decorated with colorful lights on this day: traditional lamps, candles and fireworks are lit there. Special oil lamps proclaiming light, joy, renovation and happiness are lit in all houses. Street kiosks sell terracotta lamps, flowers and other traditional decorations.
During Diwali, wreaths of flowers, beautiful clothes, spices and traditional Indian dishes are sold at Indian markets in Kuala Lumpur.
